Why AFFF foam needs care

Older AFFF foam fire extinguishers can contain fluorinated chemicals that should not be released into drains, soil, or ordinary waste streams. This is one reason older foam extinguishers are being replaced in many settings.

Even if the extinguisher is out of date or no longer wanted, it should still be treated as fire equipment containing a substance that needs proper handling.

Never pour AFFF down the drain

Do not discharge old foam extinguishers onto the ground, into drains, or into ordinary waste containers. That can create environmental harm and may leave the business with an avoidable compliance problem.

Damaged, leaking, or suspect units should be isolated and dealt with promptly by a competent person.

The right disposal route

  1. 1Identify which extinguishers are foam and whether they are old, damaged, expired, or due for replacement.
  2. 2Arrange collection or removal through an extinguisher service provider or suitable waste route.
  3. 3Keep a record of what was removed and when.
  4. 4Replace the equipment with a suitable extinguisher type for the actual fire risks present.

What to replace them with

Replacement should not be a like-for-like guess. The right extinguisher depends on the fire classes present, the people likely to use it, the location, and the wider fire risk assessment.

In many situations water additive, CO2, powder, wet chemical, or newer fluorine-free foam options may be considered, but suitability should be checked before buying.
